A Glasgow-based spa/salon has become the first retail outlet in Britain to stock the most talked about piece of jewellery in Hollywood .

West end boutique, richardson murray , has just taken delivery of ‘The Bracelet’, a range of small cuff-shaped bands featuring a tiny engraved AIDS ribbon.

One of its biggest fans is Scots A-list star Alan Cumming, who made a powerful television advert in the States pleading with viewers to buy The Bracelet to play their

He said: “Wearing this bracelet makes me feel good.  I know the money it cost goes to a really good cause, and it's a symbol of hope for when AIDS will have left all our lives.  If you’re ever looking for a gift, this is truly one of those gifts that looks and does good.”

Other celebrity fans Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall, actor Kevin Bacon, comedienne Tracy Ullman and soul diva Beyonce.

Jumbo OrangeThe Bracelet is the brainchild of AIDS charity Until There’s a Cure, which was started up in 1993 by two Californian women Dana Cappiello and Kathy Scutchfield, both of whom lost loved ones to the disease.

Since the two friends launched the charity, almost 600,000 have been sold in the US , with some $6m (£3.37m)) being donated to AIDS-related causes in the process. Until There's A Cure Foundation was the founding donor of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

LeatherThe stylish accessories, which have been retailing in America since 1993, launched the trend for charity jewellery. Subsequent imitators have included The Lance Armstrong Foundation, with their $1 ‘Live Strong’ band ­– this summer’s hottest fashion accessory in the States.

The Until Bracelet has been featured on Oprah, Good Morning America and the Rosie O’Donnell Show and top style magazines such as People, Elle and US Weekly.

Prices start at £18, with the most expensive one retailing at £275.

I thought they were wonderful and also a great way of raising money for AIDS-related charities. The salon doesn’t make any money out of selling them but we wanted to play our part in raising awareness of the importance of ongoing AIDS research.”
